The central theme of this year’s event is “Safety and Security of Our Meetings,” a subject with instant relevance and interest among all who have witnessed high-profile issues in many European cities.  Participants will hear experts discuss the importance of prevention, preparedness, and response capacity to unexpected incidents, as well as other related topics.

About Lviv

Lviv is a city of 750,000 residents about 70 km. from the EU border and 160 km. from the eastern Carpathian Mountains. Lviv has a colourful history dating to 1256 when King Danylo Halytski founded the city, part of the Galician Kingdom, and named it after his son, Lev.  Over more recent years, Lviv was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1918 and Part of Poland before World War II.  As a result, the European influence on Lviv is seen in its architecture throughout the city, as well as on the multi ethnicities and religions evident in the variety of church styles, education, and places of worship.

Many of you will be coming to Lviv for the first time and will see why Phil Black of CNN called Lviv “The European Cultural Capital You’ve Never Heard Of” (July 12, 2012).  The charm of narrow cobblestone side streets, cafe culture, and eclectic architectural style is seen everywhere in the central part of the city.  The favourable exchange of the Euro and American Dollar for the Ukrainian Hryvnia gives huge value to visitors at restaurants and shops.

Lviv is proud that the central city is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and joins so many of your cities with UNESCO designations.  As summer approaches, Lviv will explode with festivals and celebrations worth visiting.
